What are EMDR Intensives?

EMDR Intensives are designed to expedite the healing process for individuals who cannot commit to weekly sessions, or for individuals looking for quicker, more rapid results. With an EMDR intensive, we might meet for several hours over several days, eliminating the interruptions due to time constraints that naturally occur in a shorter session. This allows us to accomplish much more in one sitting and can compress the therapy process into a shorter time frame.

How it Works

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) focuses on the past, present and future. We look at what  experiences from your past are causing your current struggles. Then we use EMDR to help you prepare for future scenarios.

EMDR therapy intensives work similarly to traditional EMDR therapy, involving eight phases. These phases are designed to help clients process traumatic memories and experiences, reduce distressing symptoms, and promote healing and resilience. The difference is the length of the sessions. An EMDR intensive can vary in duration from 2-6 hours and usually can occur over multiple days, but it is generally short term in length, while traditional EMDR occurs weekly or biweekly and is ongoing. The other difference is that insurance is not accepted for these, but you can use FSA/HSA funds to cover these services.

1. History Taking and Treatment Planning

The therapist gathers information about the client’s history, current issues, and goals for therapy. A treatment plan is developed based on this information.

2. Preparation

The therapist prepares the client for EMDR by explaining the process, teaching relaxation techniques, and equipping the client with tools to self soothe and remain emotionally regulated.

3. Assessment

The therapist helps the client identify specific memories or experiences to target during EMDR therapy. These memories are usually related to past traumatic events or distressing experiences.

4. Desensitization

This phase involves using bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, taps, or tones) to help the client process the targeted memories or experiences. The client focuses on the memory while simultaneously experiencing the bilateral stimulation.

5. Installation

Positive beliefs and emotions are reinforced during this phase. The client is guided to replace negative beliefs or emotions associated with the targeted memories with more positive and adaptive ones.

6. Body Scan

The therapist helps the client notice any physical tension or discomfort related to the targeted memories and uses bilateral stimulation to eliminate negative bodily sensations.

7. Closure

The therapist ensures that the session ends in a stable and calm state. The client is taught self-soothing techniques to use between sessions if needed. Techniques such as guided imagery or relaxation exercises may be used to promote physical relaxation.

8. Reevaluation

In subsequent sessions, the therapist and client review progress and identify any remaining areas of distress that may need further processing with EMDR.
