When I tell people that an EMDR Intensive involves three to four hours of therapy in a single block of time, I usually get the exact same reaction. Their eyes widen, and they ask how anyone could possibly survive talking about their trauma, anxiety, or relationship stress for that long.
It sounds exhausting. If you are used to traditional weekly talk therapy, the idea of a half-day session might feel incredibly intimidating.
But what if I told you that an intensive is not just four hours of crying or reliving your worst memories?
Let us be honest. High achievers and busy professionals do not have time to sit in therapy week after week for years just to vent about their stress. You want relief, and you want it efficiently. Traditional therapy is wonderful for ongoing support – if that’s what you’re looking for, but for some, it can sometimes feel like you are spinning your wheels. You might understand your problems intellectually, but your body still gets activated in the same way.
That is exactly what an intensive is designed to bypass. It is a highly structured, carefully paced, and deeply supportive process. You are not white-knuckling it. We are working with your nervous system, not against it.
If you have been wondering what actually happens behind closed doors during an EMDR Intensive, here is the exact step-by-step breakdown of the process.
Phase 1: The Inquiry and Preparation
We never start deep processing without a solid foundation. The process begins simply by filling out the EMDR Intensive Therapy Inquiry Form on my website.
Once you do that, I will email you a comprehensive brochure that breaks down everything you need to know, including the pricing packages and frequently asked questions. After you review that information, we will schedule a telehealth Consultation and Treatment Planning Intake Session. This is our time to discuss your specific goals in more depth and ensure this format is the right fit for you.
Once you choose your payment plan and secure your time, the real preparation begins. I will send you a Personalized EMDR Intensive Workbook. This workbook is packed with valuable education, history-taking questions, journal prompts, and affirmations. You will complete the history section on your own time and return it to me seven days before our first official session. This is a game-changer. Because you complete this ahead of time, we drastically reduce the time spent in person talking about your past. I get to know you thoroughly before you even log on or walk through the door, so we can get right to work.
Phase 2: The Pre-Intensive Session
Before we do any intensive processing, we schedule a Pre-Intensive Session. This is a dedicated three-hour preparation meeting where we review the history you provided in your workbook and discuss your goals more thoroughly.
During this time, I will do something called memory mapping. We will trace your current symptoms and triggers back to earlier experiences in the same memory network that are still causing distress. This gives us a precise roadmap for our intensive work.
But we do not just plan. We practice. During this Pre-Intensive Session, we actively work on breathing techniques, grounding techniques, and guided imagery. You will learn exactly how to regulate your nervous system. You will go into your intensive day with a fully loaded toolbox, so you know exactly how to stay grounded and present.
Phase 3: The Intensive Sessions
When the actual intensive day arrives, my first priority is your comfort and safety. Depending on your package, we will meet via telehealth or in person for sessions ranging from 90 minutes to 4 hours each.
Here is what the actual work looks like. First, we take intentional breaks. We absolutely do not process trauma or anxiety for hours straight. We pause to stretch, get water, have a snack, and let your brain rest.
Second, we use bilateral stimulation. This is the core of EMDR. We use back-and-forth eye movements, self-tapping, or auditory stimulation while you focus on the targeted memory. This stimulation taxes your working memory, which degrades the distress of the memory and reduces its emotional intensity. You do not have to recount every agonizing detail out loud. You simply notice what comes up in your body and mind, and we let your brain do the heavy lifting of rewiring those old responses.
Finally, you are always in control. If you ever feel overwhelmed or pushed outside of your window of tolerance, we stop. We immediately use the grounding skills we practiced during your prep session to bring you back to the present moment.
Phase 4: The Integration and Follow-Up
The healing does not stop when you leave the session. Because we did such concentrated work, your brain will continue to integrate and reprocess those memory networks over the next few days. You might feel a bit tired, which is a completely normal sign that your nervous system is recalibrating.
To ensure you are fully supported, we always schedule a 60-minute follow-up session one to two weeks after your intensive. This is our time to debrief, check on your symptoms, and see how the changes are showing up in your daily life. We will look at how your reactions have shifted in your career, your relationships, and your internal dialogue.
Is an EMDR Intensive Right for You?
Intensives are for the executive tired of imposter syndrome, the professional exhausted by high-functioning anxiety, or anyone who feels like weekly talk therapy is just moving too slowly. Needing rapid relief does not mean you are impatient. It means you are ready to stop managing your symptoms and start resolving them at the root.
Whether you are dealing with anticipatory fears, phobias, career blocks, or deeply stuck relationship patterns, there is a path forward. The only way out is through.
If you are tired of being stuck and want to clear the blocks holding you back, I am here to help.
